Design Consultation

If Photoshop had a face, I’d punch it.  I want ordinary photos to look extraordinary.  Photo editing should take about 49 seconds. Or less.  That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.  I’ll show you how.  You can make ordinary photos looking extraordinary. The freakishly fast and easy way.   No mad skills required. Easy sneezy lemon breezy.  You got this!

I don’t use photoshop but VSCO, PicMonkey & Afterlight are my three amigos.

I’m about to show you a gazillion before and after photos!

Get excited.

Wait.  I need to warn you about the new blog look.  Whatever you do, don’t freak your ish.  Unless freaking your ish means you will DANCE.  Definitely dance.

There’s a new blog theme here on zee blawg.

I’m working feverishly to ‘Lynne-ify’ the new blog layout. I hope you hang with me through the ugly duckling stages.  This week is phase one.  Don’t leave me.  I’ll cry into my ‘why doesn’t anyone like me journal’.

Part of the theme change meant changing feature photos for 177453726 blog posts.  That doesn’t sound so bad, right?  WRONG.  I had to revisit my old blog posts to change the feature photos.

Read my old blog posts?!!  Erhhhmergerd.  I died a thousand deaths.

My old posts make me want to ralf.  GAH.  What’s worse than horrible?  They’re that.   It forced me to edit photos for feature pics, which forced me to inhale liquid fermented grapes.  The struggle is real.

p h o t o    e d i t i n g

I dunno about you, but photo editing can come with a big fat fugly scary face.  Want to run for the hills?!    Have no fear.  I’m about to let you in on a liiiiiiiittle secret.  I edit photos at lightening speed.  Whiplash FAST.  The easy peasy breezy way.

PHOTOSHOP is a turd.

I like to get through things quickly.  You’re in no rush to get through photo editing. Really?  No rush?  Fabulous. Beautiful. Okay bye.  I love you.  But bye.  If you adore photoshop with all your heart and soul, this is not the place for you.

If photoshop had a face, I would punch it.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that visual content is everything right now… e v e r y t h i n g.

Photography matters <– I totally screamed that. It’s noisy out there on blogs and social media.  Photography breaks through the noise.

My photo editing secrets

There are so many photo editing options out there but I’m going to tell you what I use and make your editing easy.   You’ll smooch my face.  Note:  I use apple devices.  An apple a day keeps the insanity away.

Imagine living through your photo editing with a grain of sanity.  A grain.  Perhaps salt.  Tequila.

 VSCO ・ PicMonkey ・ Afterlight

PICMONKEY is Captain Cool.

Me and PicMonkey go way back.  Dear PicMonkey, it seems like only yesterday that we met.  I was on your humble photo editing site, searching for the perfect tool to express me-self.  Dude. I love you.

PicMonkey has photo mojo with cool tips that nobody knows.   It’s great to use on your computer, if you don’t have a phone (and therefore don’t live in this century.)

I vacuum my floors, iron my creases & dust my furniture with Picmonkey.  I’ve even reached the ultimate pinnacle of blogger laziness and whitened my teeth with the swoosh of a Picmonkey brush.

AFTERLIGHT will light up your life.

Dear Afterlight, you are the light on my front porch.  I love you for brightening photos and sharpening oh la la.

PS. I use Afterlight to create the white borders on my Instagram photos.  It’s d’bomb diggity.

VSCO is my jam.

VSCO is where ugly photos go to die.  I use the S2 and S3 filters, because they make me *happy* flip.  The filters bring out the white, light and bright in a photo.  Too bad I hate white * looks over shoulder, while tapping phone feverishly to whit-ify pics*

Photography skills

I’m an amateur.  Legit.  I’ve never taken a class in my life.  If I can do this, you can too.

Many of my photos are drive by shootings.   Michael drives the car and I stick my head out the passenger window, keeping my mouth shut (for the most part) and pray that I don’t swallow a gnarly bug.

I’ve been known to dangle from a chandelier, tippy toe on a countertop or pillow fight my way through a bed…just to take a photo. The struggle is real.

Your inner photo critic is a jerk.

It’s okay to be scared. Being scared means that you are about to do something brave.  Like try something new.  If you look at photos and think “GAH!” *stomps foot* then this is the spot for you.

Get your learn on.

Sign up and be the first to get on the waitlist for my upcoming course AKA ebook of epic-ness. It’s a quick downloadable ebook, full of my insider photo secrets.  My fave tools.  What equipment I use.  Step-by-step instructions.   Instantly actionable.  Totally do-able.

You’ll learn how to cross your legs, balance on one foot & hang on for dear life from a chandelier… all in the name of taking a photo.  Kidding.  Not kidding.

  1. […] for that matter ( I’m from the school of push all the buttons until something happens)…Photography is a huge part of my life and I share my editing secrets here. Did I just sound like a weird-o?  Never mind. […]

  2. Elen G says:

Lynne – I’m an app ‘ho and I do not have these apps. Whaaat? I do have a phone, however, so I’m halfway there (and of this century). I’ll be testing these out right quick. Thanks for the tip, tip, tippies. Cheers!

  3. Lynne,

I was sitting in a chair, thinking about how I’d love to have a conversation with you and just laugh, because, ya know…we’re such characters…and my semi-smart-cousin-TO-a-call-phone beeped at me and I got this post!

So I start reading out loud to Kathilynn and the kids, all eating dinner and we start laughing.
    …and laughing…

So I wanted to stop by before I headed off to counsel parents not to sell off ALL their kids and tell you that “You Make My Blogging World a Better place To Live In, Lynne.”

…oh, and BTW, Photoshop DOES have a face, …and I HAVE punched it…AND one of its programmers (Adobe is just a short drive from my house). So if you want the corporate parking lot TP’d, I’d be happy to see if I can scrounge up some minions and do your will.

As for the pic taking, YOU were the one who got me onto Instagram LAST time ya tried to teach me how to take a photo. Not sure I’ve gotten any better, but I DO have a new android phone to test the new instruction.

(I know, I know, 100% Man guy without an iPhone? Long story, but we’ll pass on that for now…)

I want the skills of a pro to ENJOY the events in my life, cause being a dad of 12 and a grandfather of 7 provides me many opportunities…

Walks in the park…(or across the dirt farm next door should the car not start today).

Romantic candlelight dinners with my darling Kathilynn (IF I can catch all the little monsters and duct tape them into their beds on time).

Sweet Father / Son Moments (A.K.A. Comical snapshots of my 6′ 3″ Samoan son as he sleeps, so I have “leverage” in case he forgets his place and wants to challenge Daddy. Hey, I may be gettin’ old, but experience rules…)

…and the occasional laugh-a-thon – like Roman (my 2 yr old son) wanted to go play in the snow.

Told him “no, you’ll be COLD!”

“Oh,” he says, looking down. “I need CLOTHES!” he smiles…”Then I go out?”

    (*runs into his room….ruffling sounds*)

…and he appears once more with socks, shoes and a hat.

So I kept my word like any good father…and let him outside.

    In 28″ of snow.

    I love being a parent.

…and I love you, Lynne. Yer m’ Hero, lady.

Sorry I’ve been gone for so long, but I’m back now, bloggin and blazing along.

    You’re #1 Fan,

    Jaime Buckley

    • Ahhhh Jaime,

You are such a doll. Let’s TP the Adobe parking lot <--- I screamed and jumped up and down as I said that. haha. PS. Do you have a Mac? If so, have I got a treat for you! GAME CHANGER. x Keep on keeping on.... and don't forget to take lots of pics of that amazing family of yours! I freaking loved the snow story. Big love to my other blogging hero... Lynne xx

      • Ohhhh yeahhhh, I’m a Mac guy. Buy as many as I can get m’ hands on!

Shoot me your treat…I haven’t had my quota for 2016 yet and we’re almost into March of 2017.

Oh, BTW, could you do me a HUGE favor? I’d love it if you could shock the tar outta a lovely young girl who is blogging for a living, inspiring people and I told her that her site–how lovely and clean and streamlined, looked like one of my absolute favorite blogs, Lynne Knowlton (grin).

She comes over here and *GASPS*….

…so would you be willing to stop by her place and leave a comment attached to MY comment…and just say ‘BOO’.

I think you’d make her year.

        Here’s the link:

BTW—knowing YOU, my dear woman, is the “game-changer” (wink).

      • Bernard Doddema Jr says:

Just found your site today. Love your style. I would love to know your Mac game changing app. I’ve been using SnapSeed and that seems to work pretty well but will have to try out these others.

  4. Thanks for all your tips Lynn. I use picmonkey and find it so good I now use the ‘royal’ paid version but I have not used the other two so ill certainly have a peek after reading your post.

    • Marie, we must be sista’s from another mista. PAINT IT WHITE. Those words are music to my ears ? I started with the free version too and moved to the Royale version and LOVE it!! It’s so inexpensive to use and sooooooo many awesome treats are in there. Right? It’s crazy cool. xoxo

  5. Tracie says:

Lynne, I still love you completely….but I am a dunce when it comes to anything like photo apps, and I don’t have a clue what I’m supposed to do with my Instagram account. I haven’t got one post on it…I’m afraid to even try these things, but apparently that’s all the more reason to jump off the scaredy-cat train, and all aboard the get-with-times express. 🙂 All I can do is try, right?

    • Hi Tracie!

I feel your pain sista… a few years ago, my kiddos had to teach me how to use Instagram. I was like… whaaaaaa?!! Now, not gonna lie… I love it! I think you will too! I’ve met so many lovely souls on Instagram, and the photos are dreamy! Post one photo with a caption, then post another and another, until you get comfy. Follow me and it will help you to figure it out. Follow others that inspire you. It’s so awesome. I pinky swear promise.

      Here’s my instagram @lynneknowlton.

      You got this girly!

      Lynne xo

  6. Yvonne says:

When your name appears in my inbox, my mood lifts, and I settle down with a cup of coffee, ready to enjoy. As always, you deliver…thank you! I’ve had so much fun playing with some photos and can’t believe the difference. I love how you write, I’m sure you’re on the couch with me, laughing away….

    • Ahhhhh Yvonne, you are just the BEST for saying that! I really appreciate it !! You just made me back flip across my living room floor in happiness. Well.. technically, I back flipped in my head. Does that count?

      Laughing from the couch, fooooshur.

      Big love!
      Lynne xx

  7. Lynne-

My favourite blog post yet because you gave away the secret I was hoping for: VSCO, AND exactly what filters you use. Yaaaas. I wondered if the sets were worth buying; they all look so beautiful but also expertly photographed. Take my money! Buying the set right now. Gracias chica.

Ps. Secret 4 secret… Canva is my secret weapon app shhh.

    • Hi Miranda! Woooohooo ! So happy you love it ! There is an old blog post (GAH!) but there’s a video on how I use VSCO. Whoop! I love that the app is free, and it comes with so much, but for a couple of dollars more, you can hit the JACKPOT with the S1, S2, S3 filters. The S2 and S3 filters are the only filters that I use in VSCO and all the other tweaks too.. like sharpening, etc.

Here’s the old blog post. Don’t barf.

PS. You may like my upcoming Ebook/wee course on photo editing with apps. I’ll be sharing my super duper insider secret on theeeeeeee number one best app in the history of ever. I use it every.single.day. for my photos/ blog.

      Big love!
      Lynne xx

    • PS. I use canva too! Love it! That magic resize for social media is pretty freaking awesome. x Love your hot tip!

  8. Heather says:

I insanely appreciate the tips on the apps, as I’m a Photoshop whore and with three tiny ones at home it’s impossible to do anything before 11pm. I do have to mention though that while I LOVE the majority of the edited photos, you completely lost the charm of your blue door when it changed and was no longer… blue. No, the before wasn’t better, but the blue door was. Same with the blue sky that turned to white/gray in the last before & after pics. Not having checked out the apps yet (I’m about to, but I’m an android user so I’m preparing myself for disappointment first, lest I not be able to use all the apps), do you know if there’s a way to retain color on a particular item, such as in Photoshop where you’re able to erase the effect over a particular area of a picture? Because if so, that blue door is too jammin’ not to save in post… (and now I’m going back to swoon over it again).

    • Hi Heather!

Yes you can retain the colour, no problemo at all. I actually used photos that I had shared on Instagram, and Instagram compression. strips out so much.

I also find that I can’t share the full pixelated photo on the blog, because it will slow my site down. Compressing photos for the web really degrades them, but keeps my site fast.

I share so many photos on my blog, but they are a hog for space LOL.

I use a Mac with retina display. The photos look gorgy gorgeous AND THEN… boom… compression/ lowering pixels/sharing on the web/ … it all goes away. Got any hints? Share with sugar bear. xx

      Big love!

  9. Danica says:

I recently discovered pictapgo – it works really well and is easy to use!

  10. Liberty says:

Cheater, cheater! And here I thought every white thing in your house naturally glowed with angelic grace!
I’m gonna run all my pics through these programs and tell myself that angels cry their tears of joy on my life, too.
